He is the son of late Senator Jesus Alcantara Miranda and the brother in law of Oaxaca's former governor José Murat Casab. In 2012 along with Ryanair he founded the Colombian low-cost airline Viva Colombia.
In 2010,2011,2012 and 2013 he was included along Carlos Slim, and Ricardo Salinas Pliego, in the List of the 100 most important entrepreneurs in Mexico by CNN 〔http://www.cnnexpansion.com/expansion/2011/11/11/listado-de-los-100-empresarios-de-mexico〕
In July 2014 Alcántara invested 100 million Euros in the Spanish Media Company PRISA, making him the largest individual stakeholder.
Alcántara's past jobs includes the director of the former Mexican bank Bancrecer, before declaring bankruptcy.
In April 2015, it was revealed by Proceso Magazine that Alcántara had sold his former house to the most important member of the President's Cabinet, the Secretary of Interior, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong. Legal documents show that the house was sold at a price of 33,870,190 Mexican Pesos in 2011 just before Osorio Chong took office. The magazine links this transaction with the 3 federal contracts, worth over 4 billion Mexican Pesos (4,000,000,000 MXN), that Alcántara was awarded while Osorio Chong held office.〔http://www.noroeste.com.mx/publicaciones.php?id=1021812〕
